Adventure in Africa
Wild and diverse, Africa teems with an amazing array of wildlife, ancient cultures and dramatic terrain. See the Great Pyramids of Giza, encounter elephants on safari, or summit Mt. Kilimanjaro. Bargain for leather goods in the souks of Morocco, stand in awe of Victoria Falls, or hitch a camel through the Sahara to find your long-awaited Oasis. There’s no place on earth with this many once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Here are a few World Trekker favorites:
Egypt—The Pyramids & Beyond
Visit Cairo, a city of 18 million with the world’s greatest collection of ancient artifacts and archaeological sites including the Pyramids, Sphinx, and Grand Palace of Giza. Then, turn back time on a Nile Cruise witnessing scenery virtually unchanged for a millennia and explore the Valley of the Kings and the Temple of Luxor along the way.
Morocco—Marrakech and More
This tiny country is full of adventure and culture with a rich heritage of African, Arab, Berber, and European influences. Moroccan souks (or markets) in the ancient cities of Fez and Marrakech are a “must see.” And if you’re looking for serious adventure, take a Saharan camel trek followed by starlit evenings at various oases, or trek on your own two feet up the High Atlas Mountains with Berber and Moorish mountain people.
Eastern Africa— To Safari or Summit?
With Eastern Africa comes the traditional safari. Visit the Maasai Mara Game Reserve and the Great Rift Valley in Kenya or see Serengeti National Park, the Ngorongoro Crater, and Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Witness the migration of the wildebeest where animals by the millions make their annual pilgrimage or make your own cultural pilgrimage into the fascinating lives of local tribes.
South Africa —From Wildlife to Wine
South Africa is one of the most modern and easy-to-travel-to countries in Africa, yet it still has a wild side. View game in the Kruger National Park, see the “Big Five” (lions, leopards, elephants, rhinoceros, and cape buffalo), and after a day in the field, return to the comfort of a 5-star luxury game resort or camp. If human history piques your interest, visit Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was held prisoner during the Apartheid era, and see a township to learn how local people’s lives are changing. Or, explore Cape Town with it’s picturesque Table Mountain backdrop, ocean side scenery, and sophisticated food and wine. Visits to Stellenbosch and Franschoek in wine country are also a great option.
